273/365 Freeloaders

273/365 Freeloaders

We often make the mistake of letting "volunteers" thrive in our garden. Granted, it's not always a mistake, noting Exhibit A. But we did allow what appeared to be an interesting flowering plant grow, and this is what we have to show for it -- beggar-ticks stuck all over the place.

It would have been nice if the squirrels would have taken the acorns rather than eat all our pears. Little F'ers.

Apparently the trees produce acorns in cycles, theoretically to slowly starve out the population of critters so that on the big production years, they can't possibly consume all the seeds, thereby allowing more trees to propagate. This is clearly one of those years, but it doesn't seem like they needed to go through the trouble since, unfortunately for us, the squirrels have moved on to bigger and better things.

Down the street from us, it's like there's a thick layer of sawdust in the road from all the acorns that have fallen and been crushed by the passing cars. And then there's me in the backyard, left raking, shoveling and scooping up by hand for more hours than I care to count.

Even though we give them love, food and shelter, I can't help but think they miss the freedom of living outside on their own.

Originally uploaded by tallasiandude.

It pretty much rained from the moment we got to our seats (thankfully, covered) to the end of the game. It seemed to let up just before we hit the parking lot.

Disappointing game -- the Sox bullpen pretty much lost the game in the bottom of the 6th.

We were entertained to discover volunteer tomato (yellow pear) and potato plants in our compost pile. Both were robust plants that seemed to avoid the blight that we've seen affecting some of our other plants this season.

256/365 A Dance with Miss Tess

256/365 A Dance with Miss Tess
Originally uploaded by tallasiandude.

A good day.

We went down to the Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River for the Narrows Festival. Beausoleil, a cajun zydeco band and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, both from New Orleans were clearly the overwhelming crowdpleasers (headliners, 'natch), but my personal fav was the Hot Club of Cowtown to whom we were able to get our bal on, outdoors, on a beautiful, sunny New England day.

There were also several acts inside the Narrows Center including Miss Tess, who has recently played a few local dances. It was great to see so many people dancing outside of our own little microcosm of a dance scene.

Spent most of the day trying to recover data after accidentally blowing away all of my pictures from 2008. (mainly because I was trying to move pictures to our new network storage drive and was wrangling with Adobe Photoshop Organizer to try and get it to recognize the new location of the pictures.) I had some backups, but only through August.

So frustrating.

So stupid.

It figures that my arm starts hurting just as I arrive to the first night of dance camp. The last time I was at camp, I was recovering from hand surgery and had a brace on my left thumb and wrist.

Dancing seemed to make it worse, so the plan was to take it easy, take ibuprofen and ice enough to be able to keep dancing through late Sunday night.
