debates

I really have been avoiding the debates like the plague. But I listen to the radio, and the TV does come on once in a while in the house. And even the "non-political" blogs tend to show glimpses of what's going on. (admittedly Left-leaning, which is a lot like living in a strange, alternate reality where people actually recognize that the President is leading us to Hell in a handbasket)

  • I did see a few clips of the first Presidential debate, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought: "Is Bush Wired?"

  • Of the summaries I've read of the VP debate, there is one particular (factual) element that amuses me. And it has several secondary amusing points.

    1. When Edwards brought up several Halliburton shenanigan that occurred while Cheney was in charge, Cheney directed viewers to check out a website for the full story. So he's providing advertising for a website. This in and of itself is only mildly amusing.
    2. However, he means to get people to look up factcheck DOT ORG but actually says to go to factcheck DOT COM
    3. The owners of the DOT COM domain got clobbered with traffic, so they redirected it to GeorgeSoros.com which contains arguments on "why we must not re-elect President George Bush."
    4. Back at factcheck.org, the folks there basically say that the document that Cheney was referring to actually does not dispute the claims made by Edwards during the debate.
In fact, we did post an article pointing out that Cheney hasn't profited personally while in office from Halliburton's Iraq contracts, as falsely implied by a Kerry TV ad. But Edwards was talking about Cheney's responsibility for earlier Halliburton troubles. And in fact, Edwards was mostly right.
They catch a few distortions by Edwards as well, but it's largely an indictment of Cheney.
